When Spray Application Is the Appropriate Choice

Spray finishing atomises coating into a fine mist that settles evenly across complex profiles and recessed panel doors. This method excels on integrated kitchen runs where colour uniformity across dozens of doors and drawer fronts matters more than microscopic texture variation. It also reaches into cornice details, fluting, and beading that a brush cannot coat consistently without pooling in recesses or dragging across sharp edges.

However, spray application demands controlled conditions. The area must be masked to prevent overspray on adjacent walls, floors, and hardware. Adequate extraction or ventilation is essential, particularly in occupied London properties where solvent-borne coatings may linger in basements or rear extensions with limited airflow. The substrate must also be in good repair; spray finishes highlight rather than hide dents, scratches, or filler edges. Brushing also generates no overspray, making it practical in situ when full masking and tenting of the kitchen or room is not feasible. Surface Preparation Protocols by Method

The sequence typically involves cleaning, degreasing, light abrasion, grain filling where necessary, a blocking primer if tannin or resin is present, and final sanding to a uniform 240-grit or finer before the first spray coat. Brushed preparation is more forgiving of minor imperfections because the brush stroke and slightly heavier film can obscure small variations. This staged approach often suits older joinery where hidden damage reveals itself only after the first coat has penetrated the surface. The key difference is that brushing tolerates iterative correction; spray demands complete resolution before the first coat.

Environmental and Site Constraints

Transport adds time and risk of edge damage. If spraying on site, the room must be isolated, HVAC systems protected, and curing dust excluded during the vulnerable tack-free window. Brushing adapts to tighter sites. Sheen, Texture, and Repairability

High-sheen finishes—satin, semi-gloss, or full gloss—show every application mark. Spray lays these down flawlessly across large areas. Brushed gloss requires excellent technique and specific flow additives to avoid lapping and drag marks, particularly on horizontal surfaces like drawer fronts where light falls evenly. Conversely, dead-flat or matt eggshell levels hide brush marks well and can look richer with slight texture, making brushing an aesthetic choice as well as a practical one.

From a maintenance perspective, sprayed films are harder to replicate in a repair. The original application pressure, nozzle size, distance from substrate, and ambient temperature all affect the final appearance. A brush touch-in on a sprayed surface can flash or read as a different texture. If long-term serviceability matters, specifying a brushed finish from the outset avoids this mismatch.   • Will the joinery be subject to temperature fluctuations or humidity swings that could stress a thin, hard film?

If removal to a workshop is possible and the substrate is sound, spray application usually produces the more uniform result. If the joinery must stay on site, carries historical repairs, or requires a repairable film, hand-brushing is the sounder specification.
